Enrolling in Benefits
Benefits coverage for active, regular full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week begins the first of the month following the date of hire, and you have 30 days to elect your benefits or make changes after a Qualified Life Event.
Eligible Dependents
When you enroll yourself in medical, dental, and/or vision coverage, you may also cover your eligible dependents, including:
- Your legal spouse or qualified domestic partner
- Children under the age of 26, regardless of student, dependency or marital status
- Children who are past the age of 26 and are fully dependent on you for support due to a mental or physical disability and who are indicated as such on your federal tax return
Making Changes After Your Initial Enrollment
During the year, you cannot make changes to your benefits unless you have a Qualified Life Event. If you do not make changes to your benefits within 30 days of the Qualified Life Event, you will have to wait until the next annual Open Enrollment period to make changes (unless you experience another Qualified Life Event).
Common Qualified Life Events Include
- Marriage
- Welcoming a new child
- Loss of coverage
- Leave of absence
- Loss or change in employment
Proof of Eligibility
To provide employees and families with affordable, quality health coverage, UMass Global requires documentation demonstrating all covered dependents meet the eligibility criteria. Some requirements include:
- For spouses and domestic partners: Marriage or domestic partnership certificate or a recent tax return listing both individuals
- For children: Birth certificate, adoption decree, court documents for legal wards or foster children and proof of disability, and in some cases, a recent tax return may also required
To avoid delays in coverage for your dependents, be sure to submit the correct documentation. If you have any questions about eligibility or required documents, the Benefits Team is available to assist.
